The winemaking traditions in Argentina date back to as far as five centuries ago, and with the 14 milion hectolitre production the country ranks high position among the world’s biggest winemakers. The main area of wine production is Mendoza with 90 % of all Argentinian winneries which make the region the leader in the quality wine production in the whole South America if not the world’s, with the forth largest area for such wine production.
The quality of Argentinian wines is reached due to the country’s favourable, relatively dry climate of mostly sunny days and quite cool nights, as well as light soil of The Andes bottom.
Argentina pays strong attention to its Malbec, a noble variety which gives strenght, dark colour and fine tannin character to the wines. Another popular variety is white Torrontes from Spanish Gaul, the produce of which are wines of strong fruit flavour and fine texture. One cannot forget about the most popular European grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Bonarda and Barbera.
For many decades the wine industry in Argentina supplied only the domestic market’s needs. However, modern winemaking technology and vinification methods introduced by the leading Argentinian winemakers have changed the image of these excellent wines with ever growing number of international fans.
